Varnishing Your Timber Floors
Timber floors are a timeless addition to any space, offering warmth and character. However, to maintain their beauty and durability, applying a protective varnish is essential.
Timber floor varnish is a hard-wearing finish for all timber species. Varnish can be tricky to apply, but with careful preparation and following the correct steps, you’ll have your old floors looking good as new and your new floors ready for whatever life throws at it.
How to Apply Timber Floor Varnish
- Prepare the area by removing furniture and sweeping to get rid of any dirt.
- Inspect the floorboards for signs of damage or holes that may need to be filled.
- Starting in a corner of the room, use a floor sander to sand the floorboards with the grain.
- Make a second pass with the sander.
- Use an edging sander around the perimeter of the room for consistent, professional results.
- Thoroughly buff the floor with a higher grit sandpaper to get rid of any sander marks and to prepare the floor for coating.
- Sweep and vacuum the fine dust left after sanding.
- Apply the first coat of varnish using a brush, roller or applicator pad—the varnish should be applied with the grain.
- Follow the varnish manufacturer’s instructions, if any. Otherwise, allow the first coat of varnish to dry.
- Apply your second coat of varnish. Once dry, carefully cut back before applying final coat.
- Allow the floor to fully dry before walking on the surface or moving furniture back into the room.
Varnishing a timber floor is usually best left to the professionals. While it is possible to hire professional equipment, like floor sanders, the process is tricky and takes some practice to get the best results.
Our range of leading varnishes provides long-lasting protection against scratches, stains, and moisture while enhancing the natural grain of your timber.
The Benefits of Water-Based Polyurethane
Solvent-based varnish used to be the industry standard when it came to timber floor coatings. These days, there is a much larger selection of products on the market, and alternatives such as water based polyurethane are a great option.
A water-based timber floor varnish offers several advantages that make it a popular choice. Here are some of the reasons you might choose Berger-Seidle or Blanchon water-based varnishes:
- Environmental friendliness. Water-based varnishes are known for their low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, which means they release fewer harmful fumes during application and are more environmentally friendly than solvent-based varnishes.
- Safety. Water-based varnishes are non-flammable, which reduces the risk of fire hazards during storage and application. They are also generally considered safer due to their lower toxicity levels when compared to solvent-based alternatives.
- Quick drying time. A water-based timber floor varnish typically has a faster drying time than solvent-based varnishes. This can be advantageous when you need to complete a varnish project quickly or minimise downtime.
- Easy cleanup. Water-based interior floor varnish can be easily cleaned up with water and soap, eliminating the need for harsh solvents. This simplifies the cleaning process and reduces the amount of waste generated.
- Versatility. Both Berger-Seidle and Blanchon offers a wide range of water-based varnishes that are suitable for various surfaces, including wood flooring, furniture, and other interior applications. Their product line includes different finishes, such as invisible, matt, satin, and semi-gloss, allowing you to achieve the desired look for your project.
- Durability and protection. Despite being water-based, Berger-Seidle and Blanchon varnishes provide effective protection for wood surfaces. They offer good resistance to scratches, chemicals and wear, helping to prolong the lifespan of the coated surfaces.
- Aesthetics. Water-based varnishes are formulated to enhance the natural beauty of wood. They provide excellent clarity and transparency, allowing the wood’s grain and colour to shine through. Unlike solvent based varnishes they will not turn orange when exposed to UV light.
Whether you’re starting a new project or refreshing existing floors, our range of Berger-Seidle and Blanchon water-based varnishes will help you achieve stunning results.
